Political Influence

The political influences seemed to be geared to the right side of the political spectrum. It also appears that this bill is geared toward the pro-life argument. After finding out that Chris Jones is a republican, it is clear to see why he would feel so strongly to pass this bill.

However, if Chris Jones is pro-life, it is interesting that he has a pharmacology degree. I cannot help to think that politics are the fuel for this bill. With the implications and the health risks that come along with this bill, one would think that someone with a strong medical background would not support something that could potentially make someone feel as though they could not seek medical care. This is why this bill has to have been influenced by politics.

If this bill were to be passed, there would be a lot more ammunition given to the pro-life cause that could potentially act as a catalyst to the the pro-life movement. The end result could lead to strengthening the Republican party and a weakening of the pro-choice movement. All of these things raise the question; Is this bill for the protection of women or is this an attempt to get more power back into the Republican party?

  1. You bring up a very valid point as to whether this movement is for the benefit of the women or the political party. I agree that a movement like this could indeed spark a huge pro-life movement, acting to unite the Republican party.
However, as you have already addressed, is this the best policy for the women? Many females out there might no fully be educated on what exactly this law entails, causing them to delay medical attention out of fear, and possibly driving them to obtain and illegal or unsafe abortion. As nurses it is our job to make sure that we fully educate our patients and get the word our there. We need to teach safe sex practices, and we need to let women know what ALL of their options are.

  2. I completely agree with the statement that we as nurses need to teach young women all of the options they have when it comes to unintended pregnancy. It would be a lot more beneficial to implement an education program than to pass a bill making intentional un-medical abortions a felony. If women understood the medical consequences of a self imposed abortion, women would be less likely to do it, and would try to find another way to deal with an unexpected pregnancy.

Education on safe sex practices and options for unintended pregnancies need to start at a younger age for women, and they need to be implemented by teachers, nurses, and doctors. The more information there is out there about all of the options available for a women the more likely that women is to make the safest choice possible when it comes to an unintended pregnancy.
